I spend many days consumed with regret and guilt. Both in equal amounts. Women in particular are conditioned by society to live in constant guilt. Guilt for not having a tidy house, not spending enough time with their children, working too much, not having the perfect body, and not looking immaculate every minute of the day. The list goes on, it’s endless.
“Make the most of your regrets; never smother your sorrow, but tend and cherish it till it comes to have a separate and integral interest. To regret deeply is to live afresh.”
Thoreau Quotes
When living with Chronic Illness you are in a state of constant guilt. We blame ourselves for the situation we find ourselves in. We didn’t ask to be sick yet we still feel guilty for being so.
Why?
We feel like this for many different reasons; we put unnecessary pressure on ourselves. Which adds to the pressure society already puts on us. Some of the people closest to us, friends, family, and work colleagues view us this way. It’s pressure upon pressure with guilt and shame mixed in.
We are constantly judged by society as; drug-seeking, faking, lazy, workshy, liars. Again the list is endless.
There is such a massive stigma applied to invisible conditions. Some, but not all. Why is that? I want to understand why.
Step by step, we will break this cycle of silence, poor information and stigma.
Chevy Chase
Regret. Song by Everything Everything.
First you’ll see me on the news, then never again
(Regret, regret)
I’m rolling in my grave
(Regret, regret)
Feeling like a grenade
(Regret, regret)
Maybe you’re the coldest
(Regret, regret)
If you’ve never felt it
(Regret, regret)
Maybe you’re the luckiest
(Regret, regret)
If you never did it
(Regret, regret)But did you imagine it
In a different way?
Did you imagine it
In a different way?Did you ever watch your life slide out of your hands?
(Regret, regret)
You wish it never had
(Regret, regret)
But all of that’s in the past
(Regret, regret)
Maybe I’m a human
(Regret, regret)
The “trying to click ‘undo’ man”
(Regret, regret)
Or maybe an automaton
(Regret, regret)
Oh how’d it all go so wrong?
(Regret, regret)But did you imagine it
In a different way?
Did you imagine it
In a different way?
Did you think that everything, everything would change?
Did you imagine it
In a different way?Maybe you’re the luckiest
(Regret, regret)
If you never felt it
(Regret, regret)But did you imagine it
In a different way?
Did you imagine it
In a different way?
Did you think that everything, everything would change?
Did you imagine it
